Con victoria del número cinco del mundo, el croata Marin Cilic, inició este viernes la serie de Copa Davis por BNP Paribas entre el Equipo CELSIA Colombia y Croacia, la cual entregará un cupo al Grupo Mundial de 2018.

Con una Plaza La Santamaría de Bogotá que contó con buena asistencia de público, Cilic superó al colombiano Alejandro González, 484 del mundo, con parciales 6-1, 6-4 y 6-1 en una hora y 51 minutos para poner a Croacia 1-0 en la confrontación ante Colombia.

Marin Cilic, quien nació en Bosnia y Herzegovina, disputó un solvente primer set aprovechando su buen día con el servicio (conectó 13 aces) y la derecha (consiguió 30 tiros ganadores), para quebrar en dos de las cuatro oportunidades que tuvo. En el segundo parcial, González se soltó un poco más y empezó a darle ritmo al croata, sin embargo, terminó entregando su servicio en la única oportunidad que concedió. Ya en el tercero, Cilic quebró en el inicio y en el intermedio del set para mantener la ventaja hasta el final del encuentro. 

"Definitivamente contrarrestar el saque de Cilic fue lo más difícil del partido, poder ponerle presión a la bola cuando sacara. Cuando uno va ganando los games de saque tan fácil, uno se siente a la hora de recibir más tranquilo, y siento que eso pasó con él hoy", manifetó 'Gonzo' en rueda de prensa.   

"Creo que soy un jugador muy sólido cuando entro en esos rallies, empiezo a coger más ritmo y me pongo más intenso en el partido, aunque en el tercer set el marcador no lo dice, sentí que pude jugar más, tuve break points. Solo faltó dar un poco más en los puntos con mi saque, pero él jugó muy bien", concluyó el colombiano.

Entretanto, el reciente finalista de Wimbledon, destacó lo bien que se sintió jugando en la Plaza La Santamaría y subrayó su gran rendimiento con el servicio. "Creo que para ser mi primer partido, y por las condiciones de la altura, jugué muy bien. En particular tuve un buen día con el saque y tuve un buen control de él. Pienso que Alejandro jugó muy bien el segundo set y esto fue un poco más difícil para mí, pero en general, al ser mi primer partido, estoy muy contento". Y cerró: "Voy a tomar cosas positivas del partido de hoy y a trabajar para mejorar".

Ahora será el turno de Santiago Giraldo (131°) para disputar el segundo punto ante Franko Skugor (324°), quien reemplazó a Viktor Galovic (239°) por problemas en la espalda. Este será el primer enfrentamiento entre ambos jugadores.

Mientras tanto, este sábado se jugará el punto de dobles entre Juan Sebastián Cabal y Alejandro Falla ante Nikola Mektic y Franko Skugor, equipos que nunca antes se han enfrentado en el circuito. Mientras que el domingo iniciarán la jornada Marin Cilic ante Santiago Giraldo y luego se medirán Alejandro González ante Viktor Galovic.

Vale la pena recordar que los capitanes tienen hasta una hora antes de los partidos del sábado y del domingo para cambiar a alguno de los jugadores de los equipos.

Las confrontaciones de Copa Davis se juegan a cinco puntos, cuatro de sencillos y uno de dobles. El equipo que consiga tres de los cinco puntos, gana la serie. Los partidos se juegan al mejor de cinco sets, tal como sucede en los torneos de Grand Slam.

Davis Cup: Marin Cilic defeats Alejandro González to give Croatia their first point against Colombia

The world’s number 5, Marin Cilic, started proceedings in this Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group 2018 Play-Offs between Croatia and CELSIA Team Colombia with a win on Friday.

In a crowded Santamaría Plaza, Cilic overcame the Colombian Alejandro González, ranked 484 in the world to win 6-1, 6-4 6-1 in an hour and 51 minutes to give Croatia a 1-0 lead in the tie against Colombia.

Marin Cilic, who was born in Bosnia & Herzegovina, played a clean first set taking advantage of the conditions with his strong serve (including 13 aces) and forehand (he hit 30 winning shots), to break twice in the four opportunities he had. In the second set, González came into his own a little more to fight back against the Croatian, however he ended up with his serve being broken during the one and only opportunity that was conceded. Then in the third set, Cilic broke first at the start and again during the middle of the set, holding his advantage until the end of the match.

"Definitely countering Cilic’s serve was the hardest part of the match, and being able to apply pressure with my return. When you’re winning games on serve so easily, you’re more comfortable during the rest of the match and I think that’s what happened with him today”, 'Gonzo' said during the press conference.   

"I think I’m a solid player when I get into rallies; I start to get into more of a rhythm and I am more intense. However the result of the third set doesn’t reflect this – I felt like I could have played better, especially on the break points. I missed out by not winning more points with my serve, but he played really well”, concluded the Colombian.

Meanwhile, the recent Wimbledon finalist talked about how good he felt playing in the Santamaría Plaza, highlighting his strong serve. “I think that this being my first game and with the conditions such as they are with the altitude, I played well. I think today my serve was strong and controlled. I think Alejandro played well, particularly in the second set, which made it harder for me. But on the whole, for my first match, I’m happy". He concluded by saying “There are plenty of positives I can take from the match and I’ll keep working to try and improve ".

Now it’s the turn of Santiago Giraldo (ranked 131) to fight for the second point against Franko Skugor (ranked 324), who is replacing Viktor Galovic (ranked 239°) who is suffering from back problems. This will be the first time these two players have met on court.

On Saturday the doubles point will be contested between Juan Sebastián Cabal alongside Alejandro Falla and Nikola Mektic with Franko Skugor, two teams which have never met previously on the circuit. Then on Sunday, the day will start with Marin Cilic versus Santiago Giraldo followed by Alejandro González against Viktor Galovic.

It’s worth noting that the captains have up until an hour before the matches start on Saturday and Sunday to make any changes to their chosen players from the team.

Davis Cup ties are played for five points, four singles and one doubles. The first team to win three points wins the tie. The matches are played for a best of five sets, as is the case in Grand Slam tournaments.
