Este jueves quedaron definidas las llaves de la serie de Copa Davis por BNP Paribas entre el Equipo CELSIA Colombia y Croacia, la cual se jugará del 15 al 17 de septiembre en la Plaza La Santamaría, sobre polvo de ladrillo, y entregará un cupo al Grupo Mundial.

Los enfrentamientos se jugarán de la siguiente manera:

Viernes

1. Alejandro González vs Marin Cilic: este será el primer enfrentamiento entre ambos jugadores.
2. Santiago Giraldo vs Viktor Galovic: este será el primer enfrentamiento entre ambos jugadores.

Sábado

1. Juan Sebastián Cabal y Alejandro Falla vs Nikola Mektic y Franko Skugor: primer enfrentamiento entre ambos equipos.

Domingo

1. Santiago Giraldo vs Marin Cilic: este será el sexto enfrentamiento entre ambos: el croata se impuso en Chennai 2010, en el Abierto de Australia 2011, en el Masters de Miami 2013 y en el Masters de Roma 2014. Sin embargo, el colombiano ganó el último encuentro en Ginebra 2015.
2. Alejandro González vs Viktor Galovic: este será el primer enfrentamiento entre ambos jugadores.

"Creo que los dos primeros partidos son importantes, así como el dobles, estamos preparados, mentalizados y listos para dejarlo todo este fin de semana", expresó Pablo González, capitán del Equipo Colombia en la rueda de prensa posterior al sorteo. 

Entretanto, Santiago Giraldo puntualizó lo que serán los partidos del inicio de la serie. "La idea de Marin me imagino que no es diferente a lo que siempre intenta. Es un jugador de casi dos metros que saca muy bien y quiere hacer muchos puntos gratis con su saque. Personalmente nos conocemos y nos hemos enfrentado varias veces. A Galovic no lo conozco muy bien y eso es bueno a nuestro favor al tener experiencia contra un jugador un poco más novato".

"Creo que más que enfocarnos en ellos es tener muy claro lo que debemos hacer en la cancha", expresó Alejandro González, segunda raqueta del país. "Aunque sabemos que Marin es un jugador agresivo, hay que tratar de que nosotros seamos los que tengamos la iniciativa, los que vayamos a buscar los partidos y esta serie".

De otro lado, el equipo croata, capitaneado por Zeljko Krajan, manifestó que están preparados para esta serie y lograr el objetivo de quedarse en el Grupo Mundial. Uno de ellos, Viktor Galovic, quien hará su debut en esta competencia, destacó que las condiciones siguen siendo duras, pero el que Cilic juegue primero le servirá para "conocer el ambiente y alistarse para su partido". 

Marin Cilic, quien esta semana es número cinco del mundo, se refirió sobre el duelo atractivo del domingo donde enfrentará por sexta vez a Giraldo. "Para él estar jugando en su propio país le va a significar tener mucho apoyo en el partido. Hemos jugado bastante antes y siempre son buenos partidos. Yo voy a enfocarme en lo que tengo que hacer con mi saque para ser agresivo".

Cabe anotar que los capitanes tienen hasta una hora antes de los partidos del sábado y del domingo para cambiar a alguno de los jugadores de los equipos.

Las confrontaciones de Copa Davis se juegan a cinco puntos, cuatro de sencillos y uno de dobles. El equipo que consiga tres de los cinco puntos, gana la serie. Los partidos se juegan al mejor de cinco sets, tal como sucede en los torneos de Grand Slam.

Davis Cup: Alejandro González and Marin Cilic will open the tie between Colombia and Croatia

This Thursday the make-up of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas tie between Croatia and CELSIA Team Colombia was defined. The tie – to decide which team will be promoted to the World Group – will be played on clay between15-17 September in Bogotá’s Santamaría Plaza.

The order of the play-offs will be:

 Friday

1. Alejandro González vs Marin Cilic: the first time these two have played together.
2. Santiago Giraldo vs Viktor Galovic: similarly, this will be the first time these players have met on court.

Saturday

1. Juan Sebastián Cabal and Alejandro Falla vs Nikola Mektic and Franko Skugor: this will be the first time these two teams have played together.

Sunday

1. Santiago Giraldo vs Marin Cilic: this will be the sixth showdown for these two. The Croatian won in Chennai 2010, at the 2011 Australian Open, at the 2013 Miami Masters and at the Rome Masters in 2014. However, the last time the two men played in Geneva in 2015, it was the Colombian who won.
2.  Alejandro González vs Viktor Galovic: the first time the two players have met on court.

"I think that the first two matches are important – as are the doubles. We are prepared, both mentally and physically, and ready to give our all this weekend” said Pablo González, Colombian team captain, at the post-draw press conference. 

Meanwhile, Santiago Giraldo gave his thoughts on the first two matches that will kick-off this tie: “I’d imagine Marin will be following his usual plan. He stands at almost 2m with a strong serve, which he uses to win points. We know each other very well and have played together several times. I don’t know Galovic that well, but it should count in our favour to have a more experienced player facing someone who is relatively new by comparison”.

“I think rather than focusing too much on them [the Croatian Team], we should be working on clarifying what we need to be doing on court”, said Alejandro González, who is his national team’s second player. "Although we know that Marin is an aggressive player, it’s up to us to try to take the initiative as we look to win matches and, ultimately, the tie”.

On the other hand, the Croatian Team, captained by Zeljko Krajan, made it clear that they are ready for the tie and are looking to stay in the World Group. Team member, Viktor Galovic, who will be making his debut in the competition, highlighted that the conditions continue to make it tough for the team, but that with Cilic playing first he will have a chance to “take stock of the conditions and atmosphere and therefore be better prepared for the match”.

Marin Cilic, who this week became the world number five, talked about the hotly-anticipated duel this Sunday where he’ll face Giraldo for the sixth time. "For him, he’s playing at home and will have a lot of support during the match. We’ve played several times previously and they’ve always been good matches. I’m going to focus on what I need to do – in terms of my serve and playing aggressively".

It’s worth noting that the captains have up until one hour prior to the matches on Saturday and Sunday to switch players and make any changes to the line-up.

Teams look to win five points during Davis Cup ties – from four singles matches and one doubles match. The first team to win 3 points, wins the series. Matches are best of five sets, as is the case in Grand Slam tournaments.
