Alejandro Falla on his great opportunity ahead of the Davis Cup

A last minute change played in Alejandro Falla’s favour as he joins the line-up for the play-off between Colombia and Croatia in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas. Robert Farrah, who was one half of the team’s doubles pair, failed to recover from his back injury in time, leaving him unable to represent his country on this occasion and withdrawing from the competition.

Falla, who was born in Cali and is 33, will be playing his 27th tie in this tournament, having made his debut in 2001 aged 16. In his career to-date he’s played 47 Davis Cup matches of which 31 were victories, nine in doubles with the last time being a match against Canada in 2010, alongside Juan Sebastián Cabal with whom he’ll be playing on Saturday. Alejandro Falla knows that this is a golden opportunity for our country to ascend, for the very first time, into the 16 best teams in the world.

The Colombian Tennis Federation interviewed the Colombian player who told us about his thoughts ahead of this new tie against Croatia, his experience in doubles and the likelihood of him playing for a point in the singles.

How did Alejandro Falla feel about replacing Robert Farah who is such a great doubles player?

I felt bad for Robert because he had fought so hard to be here and he’s really earned his position with a great doubles career alongside Juan Sebastián. But on the other hand, I was happy that the team was trusting in me and that Robert and Juan Sebastián were in agreement that I should play doubles. Robert has been a great help this week to ensure that I am playing as well as I can. And for me, it is always an honour to represent Colombia, I’ve always been ready to step in should the team need me and I have always made myself fully available to Pablo as and when he required.

You’ve previously played with Juan Sebastián Cabal, but some time ago. How has it been to team up on court once again?

The reunion was fantastic because we hadn’t played together but some years ago and we’ve always got along well and have a good chemistry on court. And the good thing for me is that he and Robert are ‘pure’ doubles players, they have so much experience of this environment and they have a different way of training that is much more strategic, analysing their opponents; and Robert has helped me to learn all about this. I think I’m a capable doubles player, I enjoy them and I like to play and I’ve had good results both in the Challenger and ATP such as when I played with Malisse in the San José ATP.

And Robert has been on court offering advice?
He’s spoken to me a lot about where to locate myself on court, how to close gaps and strategies for my serve and returns. It’s sound advice that has served him well and that’s why he’s sharing it with me. I think all of this is a great help for me.

¿What do you make of the option that Marin Cilic might play doubles?
I think Cilic is ready to play for three points if necessary. Physically he’s looking good and is the favourite in the tie and I think that he’s not going to have any problem adapting to the conditions. He’s such a great player, fifth in the world with a Grand Slam in the bag, that sure he’s had to take time to get used to everything but at the end of the day he is at such a high level that he’ll manage it without any problems. That’s why I don’t think we can totally discount him from the doubles and I think that depending on how the tie is going, if they’re really needing to win the point, then he might get onto court.

You’ve spent many years representing Colombia in the Davis Cup, and the team has had several opportunities for promotion into the World Group. What are your thoughts on the team this time around?
We were speaking about this yesterday with the team. This is our fifth time in a play-off and perhaps now that there are quite low expectations given that quite a few players have dropped in the rankings. In some respects this is a good thing because it reduces the pressure a bit, but at the same time experience has taught us to adopt a calm approach and not to feel ‘obliged’ to win. We just need to give our all on court – giving 100% is the most important. We’re representing our team, our country and the most important thing for us is that we’re all giving it everything we’ve got.

Do you feel ready should you be required to play for a singles point?
I’m here and I’m ready for that too. I hope I won’t be needed because Alejandro is on good form and has been focusing on playing in the singles; he’s been looking good in training. Santiago is also ready play with confidence. I think that in the Davis Cup, despite rankings, is different; they are five set matches and we’re the home team with the public support in our favour and that can be a massive boost to our confidence.
