En una gran remontada, el tenista colombiano Santiago Giraldo se llevó la victoria en el segundo punto de la serie de Copa Davis por BNP Paribas entre el Equipo CELSIA Colombia y Croacia, la cual entregará un cupo al Grupo Mundial de 2018.

La principal raqueta del país, 131 del mundo, se llevó un épico encuentro ante Franko Skugor (324°), remontando 2 sets a 1, y lo venció con parciales 6-4, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4 y 6-2 en tres horas y 49 minutos para dejar igualada la serie 1-1 tras finalizar la jornada del viernes.

Giraldo jugó un buen primer set y le bastó uno de los cuatro quiebres que consiguió para irse en ventaja; sin embargo, Skugor empezó a meterse en el partido y logró ganar protagonismo con su potente servicio; esto le sirvió al croata para ganar los dos siguientes parciales y ponerse a un paso de quedarse con la victoria.

Pero el colombiano, apoyado por el público que empezó a ser esencial en los momentos importantes, tiró de garra y se llevó un ajustado cuarto set; y siguió de largo ganando el definitivo ante el croata que empezó a mostrar cansancio.

"Tengo que agradecer al público, la verdad para ser viernes fue buena la asistencia", expresó el colombiano. "Fue un partido dificilísimo si bien no jugué buen tenis, pero por momentos tuve un buen nivel. Skugor fue muy agresivo y muy duro, y por momentos me sorprendió. Lo importante son las sensaciones con las que termino y que quedamos con vida hasta el domingo".

Puntualmente, el colombiano resaltó el buen juego de su rival, que por momentos se elevó en el partido y estuvo a punto de obtener la victoria. "Se sabe que estos son partidos muy difíciles, es un repechaje al Grupo Mundial y estamos jugando ante los recientes subcampeones de la Copa Davis. Llevaba muchos días preparándome para esto y eso me dio la tranquilidad".

Giraldo también se refirió al público presente en la Plaza La Santamaría que fue vital en diversos momentos del partido. "La barra estuvo espectacular, es un regalo para mí poder estar presente y recibir la energía, sobretodo de los niños que estaban animando. Estoy seguro que en los próximos días podemos seguir llenando la Plaza".

Entretanto, Franko Skugor, quien reeemplazó de último momento a Viktor Galovic por una lesión en la espalda, expresó que le pasó factura la parte física durante algunos tramos del compromiso. "Estuve un poco cansado durante el cuarto set y físicamente fue un poco duro para mí. Hubo frío y lluvia durante el partido y eso me costó, así como los rallies largos. Luego, Giraldo jugó mejor el quinto set".

En el primer turno del día, Marin Cilic, número 5 del mundo, derrotó a Alejandro González (484°) por 6-1, 6-4 y 6-1 en una hora y 51 minutos para darle el primer triunfo a Croacia en el día. Mientras tanto, este sábado se jugará el punto de dobles entre Juan Sebastián Cabal y Alejandro Falla ante Nikola Mektic y Franko Skugor, equipos que nunca antes se han enfrentado en el circuito. Mientras que el domingo iniciarán la jornada Marin Cilic ante Santiago Giraldo y luego se medirán Alejandro González ante Viktor Galovic.

Vale la pena recordar que los capitanes tienen hasta una hora antes de los partidos del sábado y del domingo para cambiar a alguno de los jugadores de los equipos.

Las confrontaciones de Copa Davis se juegan a cinco puntos, cuatro de sencillos y uno de dobles. El equipo que consiga tres de los cinco puntos, gana la serie. Los partidos se juegan al mejor de cinco sets, tal como sucede en los torneos de Grand Slam.

Davis Cup: Santiago Giraldo beats Franko Skugor to level the tie between Colombia and Croatia

In a triumphant comeback, Colombian tennis player Santiago Giraldo secured the second point in this Davis Cup by BNP Paribas tie for CELSIA Team Colombia against Croatia as the two teams fight for a space in the 2018 World Group.

The country’s top tennis player, 131 in the world, won an epic match against Franko Skugor (ranked 324) coming back from being down 2 sets to 1 to win 6-4, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4 y 6-1. The match, which lasted 3 hours 49 minutes, levelled the tie 1-1 to round off Friday’s play.

Giraldo played a strong first set where he achieved one of the four breaks that he achieved to obtain the advantage. However, Skugor then started to get back into the game, making gains with his powerful serve. It was this which helped the Croatian to win the next two sets and well-placed to snatch victory.

But the Colombian, helped by the support of the crowd, started to step-up in the most important moments, clawing his way back to take the fourth set before taking the fifth as his Croatian opponent started to flag.

"I really have to thank the public, for a Friday, this was a great turnout", the Colombian said. "It was a really hard match and maybe I didn’t play great tennis, though there were moments when I was playing at a good level. Skugor was playing aggressively and very hard, which surprised me at the time. The important thing, however, is to keep in mind how I felt when I finished and that we still have a fighting chance for Sunday".

The Colombian also highlighted how well his opponent was playing, really rising to the occasion with victory almost in his grasp. "We know that these are really difficult matches, it’s a play-off for the World Group and we are up against the recent Davis Cup runners up. I’ve spent many days preparing for this moment which helped me to stay calm".

Giraldo also talked about how the crowd in the Santamaría Plaza played a crucial part at various points during the match. “The cheers from the crowd were amazing and I felt so lucky to be able to be playing before them, receiving their energy – especially from the kids who were incredible. I’m sure that we’ll fill the Plaza over the next couple of days ".

Meanwhile, Franko Skugor, who was a last minute substitution for Viktor Galovic who was suffering from a back injury, said that he found certain parts of the game physically challenging: "I was quite tired during the fourth set, which was hard for me. Also there were periods of rain and it was cold at points during the match, which were challenging and the long rallies were also punishing. Then Giraldo played better during the fifth set, and this cost me at the end of the day ".

In the first match of the day, Marin Cilic, the world’s number 5, defeated Alejandro Gonzalez (ranked 484) 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 in a match that lasted just 1 hour 51 minutes to give Croatia the first win of the day. This Saturday the doubles point will be contested between Juan Sebastián Cabal alongside Alejandro Falla and Nikola Mektic with Franko Skugor, two teams which have never met previously on the circuit. Then on Sunday, the day will start with Marin Cilic versus Santiago Giraldo followed by Alejandro González against Viktor Galovic.

It’s worth noting that the captains have up until an hour before the matches start on Saturday and Sunday to make any changes to their chosen players from the team.

Davis Cup ties are played for five points, four singles and one doubles. The first team to win three points wins the tie. The matches are played for a best of five sets, as is the case in Grand Slam tournaments.
