Los tenistas croatas Marin Cilic y Nikola Mektic remontaron en el punto de dobles y pusieron 2-1 a su favor la serie de Copa Davis por BNP Paribas entre el Equipo CELSIA Colombia y Croacia, la cual entregará un cupo al Grupo Mundial de 2018.

Los europeos vencieron a los colombianos Juan Sebastián Cabal y Alejandro Falla, tras remontar 0-2 en sets, por marcador 5-7, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2 y 6-4 en 3 horas y 58 minutos de partido.

Cabal y Falla pusieron a soñar a los colombianos tras llevarse los dos primeros parciales de manera ajustada y con el apoyo del público que alentó durante cada punto. Sin embargo, Cilic y Mektic empezaron a tomar confianza y a generar agresividad desde la devolución: a partir del tercer set quebraron en cuatro ocasiones de las ocho que provocaron, y no cedieron ningún break.

En el set decisivo el juego fue parejo en cada uno de los games, sin embargo, Cilic aprovechó un tiro ganador desde la devolución en el octavo game para quebrar y luego sacar para llevarse la victoria y quedar a un paso de mantenerse en el Grupo Mundial.

"Creo que ellos subieron el nivel al tiempo que nosotros bajamos un poco. Al inicio estábamos poniendo mucha presión con la devolución, pero personalmente creo que bajé un poquito y eso se sintió bastante. A pesar de eso, en el cuarto set tuvimos chance de quebrarle a Cilic, pero se nos escapan esas oportunidades, y luego él también empezó a devolver muy bien", aseguró Alejandro Falla en rueda de prensa. 

Sobre el ingreso de Cilic por Franko Skugor, quien estaba previamente anotado para el dobles, Cabal aseguró que desde el equipo colombiano no se cambió la estrategia para enfrentarlo. "Desde ayer sabíamos que él iba a jugar el partido de hoy, después de que Skugor jugara cinco sets con 'Santi' ya la teníamos muy clara. Simplemente hicimos lo nuestro, intentamos desde la primera hasta la última bola, pero infortunadamente no le pudimos dar el punto a Colombia".

De otro lado, el equipo croata manifestó que fue importante tener la motivación y seguir confiados en que podían lograr la victoria. "Durante el todo el partido mantuvimos la estrategia, pero al terminar el segundo set sentimos que estábamos perdiendo ‘el momento’; eso fue duro para nosotros. Luego, trabajamos en mejorar la devolución y en poner presión en los colombianos. Falla estaba jugando increíble y para nosotros fue esencial que bajara el nivel", expresó Cilic.

Por su parte, Mektic enfatizó en que "fue muy duro estar dos sets a cero abajo, fue difícil mantener nuestro enfoque mental, pero estábamos convencidos de que podíamos ganar. Yo subí el nivel en mi saque y la devolución y eso fue importante".

Hay que resaltar que en la jornada del viernes, Marin Cilic (5°) venció a Alejandro González (484°) por 6-4, 6-1 y 6-4 y puso adelanta a Croacia en la serie; y luego Santiago Giraldo (131°) puso la igualdad al vencer a Franko Skugor (324°) por marcador 6-4, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4 y 6-2.

Este domingo se jugará el cuarto punto entre Marin Cilic y Santiago Giraldo, las principales raquetas de cada país, y de ser necesario, el quinto punto se disputará entre Alejandro González y Franko Skugor. Vale la pena recordar que los capitanes tienen hasta una hora antes de los partidos para cambiar a alguno de los jugadores de los equipos.

Las confrontaciones de Copa Davis se juegan a cinco puntos, cuatro de sencillos y uno de dobles. El equipo que consiga tres de los cinco puntos, gana la serie. Los partidos se juegan al mejor de cinco sets, tal como sucede en los torneos de Grand Slam.

Davis Cup: Cilic and Mektic win the doubles and Croatia lead the tie against Colombia 2-1

Croatian tennis players Marin Cilic and Nikola Mektic claimed the doubles point to lead this Davis Cup by BNP Paribas tie against CELSIA Team Colombia 2-1, as the two countries battle for a place in the 2018 World Group.

The Europeans defeated Colombians Juan Sebastián Cabal and Alejandro Falla, making a comeback from losing the first two sets to finish 5-7, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in a match that lasted 3 hours 58 minutes.

Cabal and Falla looked to be making Colombian dreams come true after taking the first two, closely contested, sets, receiving tremendous support from the crowd who cheered them on at each point. However, Cilic and Mektic started to gain confidence and played more aggressively, particularly their returns making four out of the eight possible breaks in the third set without conceding any breaks to Colombia.

The deciding set was closely contested in every game, however Cilic hit a winning shot in the eighth game to break the Colombians, before serving to achieve victory and bring the Croatians a step closer to retaining their positin in the World Group.

"I think they upped their game at a time when we started to drop ours a little. At the start, we were applying a lot of pressure with our returns, but I think that I personally dropped my level a little and that made quite a difference. Despite this, we had a chance to break Cilic’s serve in the fourth set, but we didn’t take these opportunities and then he started to return really well”, commented Alejandro Falla in the press conference. 

About the substitution of Cilic for Franko Skugor – who had been previously selected for the doubles, Cabal noted that the Colombian team hadn’t changed their strategy for the match. "Since yesterday, we knew that he’d play today, as soon as Skugor played five sets against ‘Santi’ it was pretty obvious, We did our own thing and tried our very best from start to finish, but unfortunately we were unable to win the point for Colombia ".

On the other hand, the Croatian team highlighted the importance of staying motivated and keeping faith that they could win. "We maintained our strategy throughout the whole match, but at the end of the second set we felt that we were losing momentum and that was hard for us. We then worked on improving our returns and putting pressure on Colombia. Falla was playing amazingly and for us it was important that he also dropped his level”, said Cilic.

Mektic went on to say that “it was really tough to be two sets down and to keep our mental focus, but we were sure that we could win. I upped my game, particularly with my serve and return and that was important”.

It’s worth noting that on Friday, Marin Cilic (ranked 5) defeated Alejandro González (ranked 484) 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 to put Croatia ahead in the tie; Santiago Giraldo (ranked 131) then levelled the score with a win against Franko Skugor (ranked 324) 6-4, 4-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

On Sunday, the fourth point will be contested between Marin Cilic and Santiago Giraldo, the top players for their respective countries, and if necessary the fifth point will be played between Alejandro González and Franko Skugor. It’s worth noting that the captains have up until an hour before the matches start on Saturday and Sunday to make any changes to their chosen players from the team.

Davis Cup ties are played for five points, four singles and one doubles. The first team to win three points wins the tie. The matches are played for a best of five sets, as is the case in Grand Slam tournaments.
